CAMARAC launches a call for sound artists with the project Refugi Sonor

The CAMARAC collective, in collaboration with Poblenou Urban District, has launched a call for emerging sound artists to take part in Refugi Sonor, a sound installation that will be open to the public from June 29 to July 1, 2026, in the Poblenou neighborhood (Barcelona). The project will be part of the official program of the 2026 World Capital of Architecture.

A unique sound experience in the city

Refugi Sonor will transform the urban landscape for 72 consecutive hours with ephemeral pavilions offering a space of isolation from the city’s noise. In each pavilion, visitors will be able to immerse themselves in compositions created exclusively from natural sounds recorded in different locations across Catalonia. The aim is to raise awareness about noise pollution and invite reflection on the relationship between nature, sound, and quality of life.

Who can participate?

The call is open to 15 emerging sound artists —including composers, experimental musicians, sound designers, and sound engineers— with an interest in socially engaged sound creation. Each participant will be responsible for capturing the sounds of one of the 15 selected natural environments in Catalonia, such as Aigüestortes National Park, Cap de Creus, or the Ebro Delta.

The resulting compositions must faithfully represent the chosen environment and contribute to the creation of a sound biodiversity archive of the territory. Artificial sounds will not be permitted, only editing and mixing techniques that enhance the acoustic experience of the natural spaces.

Conditions and support for participants

Selected artists will have their transportation expenses covered for the sound expeditions, access to equipment and editing software, and receive technical and creative support from the project’s management. They will also have the opportunity to collaborate with institutions such as UNESCO, the Mies van der Rohe Foundation, Barcelona City Council, and ArquinFAD.

Interested applicants may submit their proposals until October 31, 2025, through this link. Check all conditions here.
