Closed doors to 21%: Poblenou galleries join the strike

The art galleries of the Creative District will close from February 2 to 7 in defense of fair cultural policies. La Plataforma and Piramidón, Contemporary Art Center, join the rest of the galleries across the country in response to the lack of action by the Central Government regarding the demand for a reduction of VAT on the sale of artworks.

Other nearby countries such as Italy, France, Germany, Belgium, or Portugal already apply a reduced cultural VAT to art, ranging between 5% and 7%, while in Spain it remains at 21%. The failure to adopt this measure in Spain creates a clear situation of inequality that directly affects galleries and artists, and hinders access to the acquisition of artworks under conditions comparable to those in the European context.

The strike, called by the Consortium of Contemporary Art Galleries, aims to highlight the cultural role of these spaces in bringing art closer to the public and to defend an activity they consider essential for society: free and continuous access to artistic creation.

From February 9 onwards, the galleries will reopen to continue defending their role as meeting places for culture.
