If there is one thing artificial intelligence cannot replace, it is the development of critical thinking and independent judgement. This is precisely what the library at BAU aims to foster, establishing itself as a documentation centre specialising in art and design, as well as a space for cultural and community exchange.
To this end, Sergi B. García explains that the library has expanded its collection with publications and monographs focused on critical thinking, spatial theory, contemporary curatorial practices and experimental design. The selection prioritises materials related to research, teaching and project-based practice, with particular attention to independent publications, exhibition catalogues and artists’ books. Another key development is the upcoming launch of a fanzine library.
BAU aims to transform its library into much more than a place for consultation: a social, cultural and intellectual laboratory, capable of building community and stimulating new ideas.
This growth is also driven by donations from lecturers, researchers, artists, designers and cultural organisations, making it possible to incorporate publications that fall outside conventional commercial channels. Recent contributions include those from art director Raquel Orellana, Type&Play, creative director Chris Viadal Tenomaa and SSAW Magazine. In this way, the library is becoming a living, collaborative collection connected to the cultural activity of BAU and Barcelona.
In an increasingly digitalised environment, the centre also champions the value of printed publications. Books and independent editions are seen not merely as reading materials, but as objects of knowledge, inspiration and formal experimentation, capable of enriching the creative processes of students and researchers.
This commitment to encouraging critical thinking and the exchange of ideas also takes shape through Cinefórum BAU, an initiative that uses cinema and moving images to generate cultural and theoretical debate. The space brings together students, lecturers and researchers from different disciplines to share perspectives and question contemporary narratives through social, political, aesthetic and spatial approaches. Looking ahead, the aim is to establish Cinefórum as a regular event, featuring thematic programmes linked to its research areas, while promoting presentations of independent publications, meetings with artists and designers, and practical workshops exploring publishing and artists’ books.
