The influence of beliefs on identity in “Sistema de Creencias: Constelación” by Arale Reartes

Arale Reartes presents her new work Sistema de Creencias: Constelación during Off Llum Bcn 2025. La nave seis will host the installation, which explores how personal beliefs shape our identity and influence our perception of the world. Using lights from Parachilna arranged as a constellation and music created by Pedro Vian, the artist creates an introspective self-portrait that connects individual beliefs with life experiences.

In a performance documented on video, Reartes lights up each bulb while expressing the associated belief, symbolizing the process of self-discovery and transformation. Through this metaphor, the piece reflects on how beliefs act as mental maps, guiding our emotions, behaviors, and relationships. The lights appear as stars that, when connected, reveal essential patterns of personal identity.

Arale Reartes combines photography and video to approach self-portraiture as a tool for exploration and social critique. She holds a degree in Art History (2016) and has specialized in Photography in Barcelona and New York. She has worked for brands like Armani and publications like Vogue. Her personal work, such as Rooms: Pursuit of Home and Coraza: Puesta en el abismo, reflects on fragility, imagination, and social representation, questioning visual and narrative hierarchies.
