On May 6th, the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya will premiere the play “The Firmament” by author Lucy Kirkwood at the Sala Petita. Directed, translated, and adapted by Gara Roda Cendra, the piece moves the original setting from rural England to Catalonia to spark a debate on justice and gender, running until June 14th.
The plot focuses on a woman sentenced to death for a brutal crime. However, her execution hinges on a biological matter: the accused claims she is pregnant. To verify this, a jury consisting of twelve women is formed to decide whether the sentence should be carried out immediately or postponed. This premise transforms the stage into a space of confrontation where the jurors not only judge the defendant but are also forced to examine one another.
The play is presented as a theatrical game that blends the harshness of the story with moments of humor, exploring the inner workings of democracy from an exclusively female perspective. Due to the high anticipation for this TNC production, the organization has announced that only the last tickets remain available for the scheduled performances.
