Last Monday, May 18, the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya presented its 2026–2027 season, the sixth and final season under the artistic direction of Carme Portaceli. The director bids farewell to the TNC with a highly ambitious artistic programme that also aims to encapsulate her vision: a firm commitment to contemporary creation (both local and universal), to revisiting great classics through a modern lens, and to strengthening the TNC as a gateway to the world.
Under the slogan “Barcelona,” the 2026–2027 season will feature 25 premieres plus 7 productions from the Barcelona Calling the Middle East festival. The programme will combine 8 in-house productions, 12 national and international co-productions, and 12 guest companies from both local and international scenes, with a strong emphasis on contemporary Catalan and European playwriting. Through this proposal, Portaceli concludes her tenure by reinforcing theatre as a space for critical thinking and social connection, through performances addressing issues such as historical memory, social inequalities, and the major challenges of today’s world.
The season will open with Sílvia Pérez Cruz, who will inaugurate the Sala Gran with a specially curated concert dedicated to the city of Barcelona. The Sala Petita will launch its programme with El Cadell, a TNC in-house production written and directed by Josep Maria Miró, one of the most acclaimed voices in contemporary Catalan playwriting. Meanwhile, the Sala Tallers will begin its season with Gota, a performance by Txema Muñoz included in the El TNC Petit programme. The season — and Portaceli’s tenure — will close with Angélica Liddell’s 00:01 La Creación, a new production by the artist that will run in the Sala Gran from June 20 to 27, 2027.
