Disseny 2 years

Discover the new exhibition of the Disseny Hub, a retrospective of Jordi Fornas’ graphic work.

The Disseny Hub opens next Friday 8 April the exhibition “Fornas. La imatge de la Catalunya dels 60“, a production of the Museu del Disseny and the Instituto de Estudios Ilerdenses curated by Pau Llop that will be on view until 24 July at the Espai C of the Disseny Hub Barcelona.

Jordi Fornas (Barcelona, 1927-2011) is the graphic designer who gave graphic identity to the new mass culture in Catalan that developed in Catalonia from 1960 onwards.

The exhibition brings together part of Fornas’ graphic production for sectors such as publishing and recording. From the album covers of a wide range of authors and performers of the 1960s and 1970s for the historic record company Edigsa to the graphic image of major publishing references in Catalan culture, such as Edicions 62, the Gran Enciclopèdia Catalana and Sierra de Oro, among others.

Jordi Fornas i Martínez (Barcelona, 1927-2011), trained at the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, devoted himself fully to painting and artistic production. In the early 1960s, he began to receive personal commissions and left painting to devote himself fully to graphic design. In this field, he achieved considerable prestige and recognition and was responsible for the design of some of the most important modern pillars of the cultural renaissance of the second half of the 20th century, giving graphic identity to the new mass culture in Catalan that developed in Catalonia.

His graphic work draws on British pop aesthetics, the design of the Swiss school and, especially, the French graphic art of the 1950s. The mixture of all these influences is reflected in the resources and uses that make up one of the mainstays of what we call the Fornas style.
